Ours is a very special school in a very special place. Visitors to Edmonds Elementary can immediately feel the positive attitude and energy that comes from everyone: staff, parents, students, and our many volunteers, all working cooperatively to build a happy and productive learning and living environment.
The highly motivated and skilled staff has created a stimulating and child-centered learning environment where quality conditions for learning are stressed and everyone is respected and valued. The staff is diverse in age and experience. They are trained in current methods, team spirited, and their schedules enable them to meet routinely by grade level.
The parent community is generous and actively supportive of all school endeavors. They are an involved and constructive group, working toward the best education for their children. The students are diverse, challenged, excited and thriving in an atmosphere of caring, humor, purpose, and commitment. Parents sponsor an assortment of after school enrichment activities.
The physical plant is a practical, user-friendly "breezeway design" facility, consisting of classroom clusters, or two sequential grade level "pods", each equipped with cutting edge curriculum materials and student access to technology.
The Edmonds Elementary School community is comprised of 360 students in grades K-6. Technology is available and used to enhance instruction and extend learning. There is a computer lab in the library, with 32 workstations, in addition to at least one computer and printer in every classroom. Many students use AlphaSmarts for word processing, process writing, and writing research projects. The building is networked to allow for electronic communication and Internet information retrieval throughout the school and the district. A major curriculum emphasis is placed on the development of students as critical thinkers and problem solvers.
Students are high performers on the WASL tests, with a very high percentage of students meeting standard in all key areas. Students are encouraged to go beyond requirements to pursue and extend their learning. Our goals in all areas are always directed at helping students achieve their "personal best." A strong professional development program prepares staff to develop their instructional expertise, to remain current and knowledgeable, and to be able to deliver a rigorous academic program.
Our PTA parents sponsor many family-oriented "happenings" outside of school hours, along with monthly PTA evening programs planned to keep parents informed regarding relevant educational issues. "Friday Packets" go home weekly with all important school information included in the "Orca News". Classroom newsletters, and Principal News-grams keep parents involved and well informed.
Children realize from day one that this is a place where they feel comfortable because they are members of a caring school community. Edmonds Elementary is a place for work and play, and a place where people respect and care about them. Their work is proudly displayed throughout the building. Courtesy and good manners are publicly recognized at monthly "Spirit" assemblies. High expectations and sturdy social-emotional supports are in place. The children's efforts are valued and praised. Their feelings and ideas are respected and appreciated.
