JT00.jpg (59330 bytes) Jasper Tomkins, Artist in Residence, visits Cedar Way Elementary June 26-27, 2002!

Cedar Way students meet and work with renowned local author/artist Jasper Tomkins.

Known for such books as The Catalog, The Sky Jumps Into Your Shoes At Night, Bear Sleep Soup, and The Mountains Crack Up, Jasper Tomkins shares his thinking and creating of writing and illustrating with students.  This great opportunity is made possible by the "Artist In Residence" program.

Students at Cedar Way were incredibly fortunate to meet this local author and artist.  His first published work, The Catalog, was immediately embraced by children, parents, and the literary community.  Receiving international acclaim, The Catalog inspired a second book entitled The Mountains Crack Up, a sequel to the beloved first book.  Mr. Tomkins went on to publish more books which evolved from so many different ideas.  He is currently working on some projects now, including some new books.

Incredibly talented and enormously creative, Mr. Tomkins spent time with students for two days discussing how he thinks, collects ideas, creates books, and creates his artwork.  He also shared how his books are published and inspired many students and teachers to be creative authors and artists.  We are very grateful for being at our school as our guest "Artist In Residence" and hope we have the good fortune to create and work with him again very soon.

A big thanks to Kristyn Staal for arranging Mr. Tomkins' visit!
