A Brief History of HTML and the Internet
Hypertext markup language, or html for
short, is a programming language designed to allow for people to produce pages
with information, links and pictures on it. Most often, HTML is used to
create web pages, but it can be used in various other ways too. The first
form of HTML was made by Tim Berners-Lee. HTML is based on SGML which is a
language that provided a way to format text. Mosaic was the first web browser
that people used to browse the internet, and version 1 came out in 1993.
NCSA, who created Mosaic, sold all rights to Mosaic to Spyglass for millions of
dollars. Today Mosaic is still part of Internet Explorer, and HTML is
still the most common language to create web pages with.
