P.E. Make-up

If you are absent from school and miss P.E. you must make it up by choosing one of the following:

1.      Read a health article and summarize it with a 5-sentence paragraph.  Some of these articles can be found in the newspaper or online @ teenhealth.org. This 5-sentence summary should be typed, size 12 font, Arial or comic sans MS and include:

  • Topic sentence that mentions key summary information: the title of the article, the author, and the article’s main point.
  • The next 3 sentences should be specific and list detailed facts.
  • Conclusion
  •  Attach a copy of the article with your summary.

2.  Open Gym

  • This is offered when the gymnasium is available
  • You will need a permission slip
  • Bus transportation is available
  • This option is not available all year
  • Listen to Channel One/Announcements for Open Gym dates

3.  BTMS athletic game volunteers with prior coach’s approval

  • Assist with set-up and clean-up for athletic events
  • Coordinate with the coach prior to the activity

4.  Watch a BTMS Volleyball or Basketball game or a Wrestling match

  • Show good sportsmanship.
  • Positive support of both competitors
  • Following the Sno-king League sportsmanship guidelines posted in the gymnasium
  • Check in and out with the gym manager
  • Must stay at least one grade level game for Basketball and Volleyball
  • Must stay for at least half of the matches in Wrestling

P.E. Requirements

Classes begin each day with a warm-up activity (e.g. stretching, running, rope jumping). Students are required to participate to the best of their ability and at a pace that is brisk enough to improve the level of fitness. The P.E. Department goal is that the students will establish good fitness habits that will lead to health related benefits throughout their lifetimes.

P.E. Clothing Requirements

1. Shirts- Students are expected to wear a plain white T-Shirt or a Brier Terrace P.E. shirt. Shirts displaying any insignias or logos will not be allowed.

2. Shorts- Plain red inexpensive gym shorts are required. These may include:

  • Hemmed sweat shorts. Loud, multicolored shorts, "spandex" type shorts, or tight fitting knit shorts are not acceptable. Spandex shorts are not to be worn under the gym shorts.

3. Sweatpants- Sweatpants many be worn instead of shorts; elastic cuffs must be at ankle level. No exceptions!

4. Shoes- well fitting athletic shoes with non-marking rubber soles are required. Slip on or unlaced shoes are considered dangerous and will not be allowed in P.E. Class. Hard sole shoes are not permitted in the gym. Shoes must be tightly laced, with a bow on top, to prevent injury during activity. No exceptions!

5. Socks- Socks must be worn to prevent blisters. White athletic socks or footies are recommended.

6. Any clothing (uniforms, practice jerseys, sweats, etc.) issued for a school sport cannot be worn as P.E. clothes.

P.E. Clothing with the school logo can be purchased throughout the year. The cost will be:

PE Shirts: $5.75

PE Shorts: $11.00

PE Sweatpants: $10.50

Marking of P.E. Clothes:

Articles of the P.E. outfit must be clearly marked with the owner's last name. Marking will be done in the following places: Shorts/Sweats on front of pant leg, T-Shirt across the chest. Markings should be 1 inch high.

Students are expected to be punctual, properly dressed, and cooperative. Students who are tardy to class receive in-class penalties. Three unexcused tardies is a lunch detention.

Students who do not bring clothes to class will be expected to wear loaner clothes. Students that wear loaner clothes could earn between 1-5 points for the day. Refusal to comply will result in a zero for the day. Each non-suit results in a loss of 1/3 the final grade. Parents and the school counselor will be notified after the 2nd non-suit.

Students who are disruptive to the learning process will be subject to P.E. Discipline Steps. P.E. Contracts are depended on the teacher's discretion. Numerous redirections and counseling will take place prior to a P.E. Contract. Refer to pg. 15 of the student planner.

Note: P.E. clothes are different from the ones worn to school.

P.E. Injury and Illness

If students are well enough to attend school, they are well enough to put on their P.E. clothes. Often students can participate in a limited activity, so we require parents to write notes only when participation in the day's activities would have a direct effect upon the illness or injury of the student.

If a student needs to be excused from participation for more that three consecutive days, a note from a physician is necessary. We request that statements from the physician limit or modify a student's participation. When total non-participation is necessary for an extended period of time, an alternate activity will be worked out between the student/physician/teacher. During this time the student will not be graded and will not need to make-up the days. An additional physician's note is required for a student to return to full activities.

An excuse from participating in the day's activities should be written and contain the following information: (1) Date and length of time your student is to be excused; (2) Reason for the excuse; (3) Signature of parent or guardian.

A student with asthma needs to bring in a separate inhaler to keep in the P.E. first aid box throughout the year. The student's name must be clearly marked on the outside.

P.E. Grading Policy
